A Natural Evolution
Like the plants that he nurtures, Rob Moffitt is growing a hub where culture can thrive

When you meet Rob Moffitt, founder and creative director of The Haus Plant, you are immediately immersed in his charm and enraptured by his ability to turn everyday fauna into works of art. What began as a plant truck roaming the streets of L.A. has now blossomed into something far more ambitious—an exploration of how design, nature and human connection can coexist. “The Haus Plant started with a simple idea: changing the way people experience plants,” says Moffitt. “My career started in nursing, and I think that experience gave me a unique perspective on how our surroundings affect the way we feel.”

After swift success with his mobile beginnings, he found footing in a space located in the Miracle Mile neighborhood, where his magic was felt by a creative network that transcended the architecture and design community. This inspired an evolution. “People were coming into our space for plants, but they were staying for the environment, the conversations and the connections they were making,” Moffitt recalls. “When the neighboring properties became available, I saw an opportunity to create something I hadn’t really seen before.”

He leaned on long-standing client and friend Clint Nicholas to collaborate with his vision and transform the original showroom into an approximately 11,000-square-foot creative compound that challenges the conventions of a traditional gallery by including a photo studio, a music studio, a gallery space, a social kitchen and guest bathrooms. “Expanding our showroom would have been the obvious business decision, but I was much more interested in creating an environment where different disciplines could naturally intersect,” Moffitt says.

Rather than relying on a formulaic approach, Nicholas and his team allowed the building to inspire the direction. “What started as a place to showcase furniture and plants, with a small podcast studio, evolved into something much bigger as partners came on board and more creative people got involved,” Nicholas recalls. Their shared goals focused on designing spaces that felt extraordinary but approachable and could function on their own while sparking creativity across each medium. “The recording studio, gallery, social kitchen and photography spaces aren’t separate businesses to me,” says Moffitt. “They’re different expressions of the same idea. I wanted to create a place where unexpected things could happen simply because the right people were in the same room.”

Nicholas and his team allowed the natural light to help inform the vibe. “One thing that captured us from the beginning was the light,” says Nicholas. “The building previously held a dog-grooming business, and even with the old marks still on the walls, it had this incredible feeling. The light cascades through the space—almost like diamonds falling from the sky.” They worked with All Natural Stone to select moody, rich-toned slabs and tiles for the kitchen, which is equipped with Fisher & Paykel appliances. They clad the bathrooms in organic-textured, jewel-toned tiles. Outdoor areas are framed by custom windows from Pinkys, which add a touch of craftsmanship. “We wanted to retain the character of the structure and build on it, creating something that felt interesting, a little unexpected, and comfortable enough that people would want to spend time there,” says Nicholas.

The result is a multifaceted artistic hub that is flexible, meaningful and enchanting. “It’s a tangible expression of the creative cross-pollination we envision for the property: a place where different disciplines, perspectives and ideas converge, inspire and evolve together,” says Moffitt. “What began as a collection of ideas has grown into a shared vision supported by a community of people who genuinely care about it. We built the physical spaces, but it’s the people and the connections between them that will define what happens next. And in many ways, I feel like we’re just getting started.”
